Resolved Question: Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT)?

May 16th, 2007 by admin

Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT)... how is this different from tradtional testing for HIV i read about it in the Red Cross blood donation site. http://www.donateblood.com.au/page.aspx?IDDataTreeMenu=41&parent=30 "We tests all donations for HIV-1 and hepatitis C RNA using Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT). This process is different from traditional testing because it looks for the actual presence of viruses, in this case HIV and HCV. Most other tests detect the presence of antibodies, which are the body's response to an infection and which take time to develop. NAT provides an opportunity to further improve the safety of the blood supply by reducing the window period', which is the time between exposure to a virus to the time current tests are able to detect antibodies to the virus." if you get tested for HIV in normal hospitals and the virus is yet to develeop will the tests show proper results? or it is better get NAT tested? hey so you are saying that it takes 6 months for the virus to show up positive with the tests conducted in normal clinics? what if i want to know asap and not wait 6 months to find out? i'm willing to donate blood and get NAT tested. according to red cross they advise you the results withhin 2 weeks. so it is possible to detect the virus within such a short period?
