Can Coconuts Protect Us From Heart Disease?

April 30th, 2009 by admin

coconutHeart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and many European countries.  In the Pacific Islands it appears that heart disease is a rarity.  Many medical studies have demonstrated that an unhealthy diet and lifestyle can lead to the development of heart disease.   So why are Pacific Islanders almost immune to heart disease?  Several prior studies have shown that coconut-eating populations around the world have lower cholesterol levels and an immunity to heart problems.

A recent study was conducted on people living on two remote islands in the Pacific (Pukapuka and Tokelau).  The foods and lifestyles were carefully evaluated.  Coconut was their primary source of food and was eaten in some form at every meal.  No evidence of coronary artery disease, diabetes or cancer was found.   Despite the high amount of saturated fat in their diets (from coconuts) their cholesterol levels were lower than expected.

Coconuts contain medium chain fatty acids and are used immediately as a source of energy, which is unlike other oils.  Vegetable, sunflower and safflower oils are comprised of long chain fats which are deposited in blood vessels as cholesterol or stored around the waist as fat.

This is some interesting data which needs to be evaluated further to determine if there really is a benefit to eating coconuts?  But right now this data suggests that adding coconuts “in moderation” to your diet may be heart healthy.

Cholesterol Levels

April 30th, 2009 by admin

Cholesterol does not dissolve in blood, and it is contained in a whole lot of the foods that you eat. By finding out which foods have high percentages of it, you can control your consumption of them, and you can get to restoring yourself to better health.

You could be suffering from high blood pressure and not know it. Stuffs like that happen a lot to folks with high cholesterol content in their systems. To put an end to it, you need to get rid of the cholesterol. You need to stop eating some of those junks you swallow and start up on fiber foods.

High blood cholesterol can give you a high blood pressure. Now you could run along and see a doctor, and spend a few bucks on consultancy, but I know that by simply putting an eye on my diet, I could lower my blood cholesterol. If you have what it takes, you could try that too.

If you are overweight, there is little question about the fact that your cholesterol is bound to be high. With fruits and a lot of fiber foods, you can begin to turn that around just like that. And I’m not just talking about losing the weight, but losing the cholesterol as well.

Cholesterol plays a role in just about all your health problems. You would not have a clue about that because you are not versed in it, but as you read this, you must know already that you need to do something about it. Well, you can lower the cholesterol, but you have to do it by diligently sticking to fiber foods.

Red Meat Kills?

It’s a sad day people.

This morning, I was going through my emails and came upon this study.

This horrible, horrible study.

This decade-long study, involving the 322,263 men and 223,390 women ages 50 to 71 who participated in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study.

This study, which tries to pry the burger from my hand by telling me that red and processed meat intakes were associated with a 20 to 40% increase in total mortality.

20 to 40%!!!

Hmmmm, 20 to 40%?

.

Question: Would you drastically reduce (or eliminate altogether) your consumption of red meat if you thought that it would improve your odds of dying from cancer by 20 to 40%?

If not, why?

LIVER TROUBLES

April 29th, 2009 by admin

Again, another study that shows what we already knew – abusing alcohol is deadly. It is easy to study the ill-effects of alcohol, but harder to face what it takes to deal with the alcohol addiction. Those who have overcome addiction know that stable recovery is achievable but it takes development of a personal sense of ethics backed up by an effective drug treatment program.
Destroying one’s liver in an attempt to get relief from life difficulties is not a viable solution.
Here is the article from Join Together
“Drunk-driving crashes and alcohol overdoses may get more public attention, but research shows that most alcohol-related deaths are caused by something much more mundane: liver disease.
Science Daily reported April 24 that researchers found that alcohol consumption was responsible for 3.8 percent of all deaths in Portugal annually, with 28.3 percent of deaths caused by liver disease. Other leading causes of alcohol-related deaths included auto crashes (26.2 percent) and cancer (21 percent).
Alcohol-related diseases accounted for 1.25 percent of all health expenditures in Portugal, researchers led by Helena Cortez-Pinto of the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Lisbon also found. “By quantifying the significant impact alcohol has on the nation’s health, we highlight the need for effective strategies to promote lifestyle changes and moderate alcohol consumption to reduce death rates, the incidence of liver disease and related costs to the healthcare system,” said Cortez-Pinto.”
The research was presented at EASL 2009, the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Vince’s Extreme Makeover

April 29th, 2009 by admin

Tonight I’m thinking back to last year, 2008 was a huge year in my life… divorce, job loss, starting over and a total transformation of myself - physically, emotionally and spiritually. I had gone through an extreme makeover… and I like to say that the new Vince is… well see for your self! Below are just 3 photos of me that I have downloaded online.

My heaviest weight was 264 pounds… I now weigh 170 pounds, and I have not yet reached my goal weight (well, I’ve reached my goal weight a few times, it keeps changing to something less each week). A year ago I had an annual physical exam… my cholesterol was over 330, my blood pressure over 150/110, my body was tired and I was advised by my doctor to make a lifestyle change or I may miss my daughter’s wedding day! I’ve lost over 90 pounds in the last 6 months.

So why post this blog about my weight loss? Well, a few reasons… firstly, my self image has improved and I am happy with who I am and what I look like! Secondly, I want to let go of the old Vince and get ready to launch the new Vince; and finally, I want to let you know that you can do it too! I had my annual physical exam a few weeks ago and my cholesterol is now 85, my blood pressure is 120/80 and I am running a marathon in June. Yes… I am actually training for a triathlon too!

My doctor, my family and my friends have asked me how I did it. My secret… a healthy diet (no takeout, no eating out, no junk food and no Pepsi), exercise everyday (I workout everyday at the gym and stay active - my kids help me with that!) and determination (I know what I want and go get it!). No fancy meal plans, no quick fix surgery, no travelling to Tibet to meditate… just my trust and faith in God!

Today’s scripture is - “Do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” - Hebrews 10:35-36

So my friends, stay tuned for more about the new adventures of Vince. Good night and stay strong!

April 29th, 2009 by admin

Yeah earlier today i was talking to a more questionable man and while he was talking to me some spit flew out of his mouth and into my eyes and ever since i couldn't stop thinking about how if he had either HIV or hepatitis C and he had a cut or sore in his mouth it could infect me through the eyes should i be worried? I've been just thinking about how they could have some sort of cut or sore in their mouth and blood from there going into their spit and into my eyes.(yeah i really need to see somone for this)
